For companies that utilize overhead cranes and lifting equipment in daily operations, it is essential that each part of the machine stay in good working order. To increase the safety and productivity of this equipment, OSHA requires that all employers proof test any and all alloy steel chain slings and all of its components before putting it into use.

Proof testing. The employer shall ensure that before use, each new, repaired, or reconditioned alloy steel chain sling, including all welded components in the sling assembly, shall be proof tested by the sling manufacturer or equivalent entity.
